Ira Bhaskar is the mother of actress Swara Bhasker. She is currently a professor of cinema studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, India. She is also the co-author of the book ‘Islamicate Cultures of Bombay Cinema’ published in 2009.
She completed her schooling at Defence Services Public School, New Delhi in 1974. After that, she did her B.A. English Hons at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi in 1978 and did her M.A. (English) in 1980 & M. Phil. (English) in 1987 from the Department of English, Delhi University.
Dr. Ira Bhaskar holds a Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
She held the posts of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in the Department of English, Gargi College, Delhi University from 1980 to 2006 and she joined the faculty of the School of Art and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi in 2006 as a Professor of Cinema Studies and is currently serving as a Dean of the School of Art and Aesthetics.
Ira Bhaskar is married to Chitrapu Uday Bhaskar, a Columnist and a retired Indian Navy officer. She is of Bihari Origin, while her husband, Chitrapu Uday Bhaskar is of Telugu descent.
Ira Bhaskar and C. Uday Bhaskar have 2 children, Swara Bhasker and Ishaan Bhaskar.
Her son, Ishaan Bhaskar is married to Bhoomika Joshi and the couple has a daughter named Junaili Bhaskar.
Her daughter, Swara Bhasker got married to Samajwadi Party politician Fahad Ahmad on January 6, 2023 in court on January 6, 2023, under the Special Marriage Act. Fahad Ahmad is the Maharashtra Unit President of the Samajwadi Party youth wing.
