Kumar Varun is an Indian stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. He was born on 19 November 1985 in a middle-class brahmin family in Arrah, Bihar, India. He also has a younger sister named Supriya Pandey, who is married to Vikram Kamath.
At the age of twelve, he moved to Delhi and completed his schooling at D.A.V. Centenary Public School, Noida, Uttar Pradesh in 2003. After that, he did his B.Tech in Bioinformatics branch with a 9.06 CGPA from Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA), Tanjore, Tamil Nadu from 2004-2008.
In 2013, he joined Mahindra & Mahindra, Mumbai as a Manager (Marketing) in June 2013 and worked there till June 2015. Then he joined DBS Bank in Mumbai as a Senior Manager (Group Strategic Marketing and Communications) and worked there for 2 years till June 2017.
Kumar Varun came in contact with Rahul Subramanian while working at Mahindra & Mahindra. The duo started their own YouTube channel ‘Random Chikibum’ and uploaded their first video ‘Kata Sky’ based on a conversation between a customer care executive and a customer on 29 July 2015 and sent it as their official entry for OML’s Comedy Hunt. In October 2015, Random Chikibum was crowned as the first-ever winner of OML’s Comedy Hunt which was judged by AIB and hosted by Biswa Kalyan Rath.
In 2016, Kumar Varun along with Rahul Subramanian wrote and acted in the 7-episode mini-series ‘Random Daftar’ based on the humor in corporate life and in the same year, he also appeared as Atul Naak in the 4 episodes of Sumukhi Suresh’s sketch series Behti Naak.
In 2017, he rose to fame with his role as ‘Failure Mehta’ in AIB: Honest Engineering Campus Placements. It was based on the college life of three engineering students, Kumar Varun as Failure Mehta, Naveen Polishetty as Average Mishra, and Rahul Subramanian as Overachiever Gokhale.
He was seen playing the role of a character named Anirban in the YouTube comedy series Better Life Foundation (2016-2018).
In 2018, Kumar Varun starred as Kranti aka Samosa in both seasons of Amazon Prime’s comedy web series ‘Chacha Vidhayak Hain Humare’ produced by OML Production and co-starring Zakir Khan, Vyom Sharma, Venus Singh, Zakir Hussain, Alka Amin, Pritha Bakshi, Abhimanyu Singh, Sunny Hinduja, and Onima Kashyap.
Kumar Varun’s first ever stand-up comedy video, ‘MBA Life’, in which he talked about his B-school life got more than 2.6 million views in just three months.
He also hosts a quiz show ‘Kvizzing with the Comedians’ featuring acclaimed comedians, sketch artists, actors, and writers from all across the country as participants. The show which started as a live show in December 2019 moved online in July 2020 due to covid-19 pandemic.
Kumar Varun is a dog lover and has an Alaskan Husky named Arya.
He is a big fan of the football club and often posts photographs of his custom-made Liverpool FC merchandise on social media.
Kumar Varun got married to actress Maanvi Gagroo on 23 February 2023 in a low-key ceremony, only attended by their close friends and family members. While Maanvi opted for a red embroidered saree with a matching veil, Varun wore an ivory sherwani with white pants and a pearl necklace.
Kumar Varun was earlier married to Deepti Asthana, a National Geographic Photographer. However, the couple divorced a long time ago.
