Mithun Raj is the elder brother of former indian woman cricketer Mithali Raj. He is an environmentalist by profession and works with the tribal rights advocacy NGO Samata.
He was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan to Dorai Raj and his wife Leela Raj.
His father, Dorai Raj served as a Airman (Warrant Officer) in the Indian Air Force and later worked with the Andhra Bank and his mother, Leela Raj worked with the engineering instruments division of Lawrence and Mayo.
During her early cricketing days as a kid, Mithali Raj would train with her brother Mithun Raj.
Mithun did his primary schooling at St. Andrews High School, Hyderabad and passed intermediate from Andhra Pradesh State Board. After that, he studied BSc in Farm Science and Rural Development at Osmania University, Hyderabad and later did MSc in Environmental Studies from Andhra University.
He also has a PG. Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS Applications in Natural Resources Management specializing in Forestry and Ecology from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, Uttarakhand & MBA specializing in project management from Sikkim Manipal University (Distance Education).
He is married and has a daughter named Anaga Raj.
