Saika Ishaque is an Indian women’s cricket player who plays for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). She is a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and a left-handed batter.
She was born on 8 October 1995 in a lower middle-class Muslim family in the Park Circus area in Kolkata. Saika grew up in a difficult environment in the slums of Park Circus and lost her father at an early age. [5]
She is the youngest of two sisters. Her elder sister, Ishrat Jahan is married to Abrar Alam. [6] [7]
Saika was introduced to cricket by her father Mohammad Ishaque, who passed away in 2008. [8]
She learned how to bowl left-arm spin from her coach and former Bengal cricketer Shibsagar Singh, who was also a left-arm spinner. [9]
In her early days, she played for the Kalighat Club and represented Bengal in both U-19 and U-23 tournaments. She has also played in the Senior Women’s ODI and T20 tournaments for the India Green Women, India A, and India D teams. She has also played for the Trailblazers team in the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2022.
Saika first came into the limelight in 2022, when she dismissed Indian batters Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur in consecutive deliveries in a Bengal vs Punjab match. [10]
Jhulan Goswami, who is her mentor played a vital role in her career and in the Mumbai Indian’s acquisition of Saika Ishaque for Rs 10 lakhs at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction on February 13, 2023.
Jhulu di gave me my first cricket kit. She has guided and supported me since childhood. She has played a massive role in my career,” Saika revealed. [11]
She made her WPL debut for Mumbai Indians on 4 March 2023 against Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium. The left-arm spinner took a wicket in every over as she ran through the Gujarat Giants with figures of 4 for 11 and played a crucial role in Mumbai’s demolition of Gujarat in the opening fixture. [12]
