Stacey Abrams is an American Political Leader, Tax Attorney, Voting Rights Activist and a Bestselling Author. She is now one of the most prominent African-American female politicians in the United States.
Stacey Abrams was born on 9th December 1973 to Robert Abrams, a shipyard worker and his wife Carolyn Abrams, a college librarian in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. She and her five siblings grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi and were raised in Atlanta, Georgia.
Her siblings include Leslie Abrams Gardner (U.S. district judge), Dr. Jeanine Abrams McLean (Evolutionary and Computational biologist), Dr. Andrea Abrams (Anthropologist), Richard Abrams and Walter Abrams.
Stacey Abrams’s sister Leslie Abrams Gardner, who is a Georgia District Judge married Jimmie Gardner, a man who spent 27 years in prison for rape and robberies he didn’t commit. Jimmy Gardner was wrongly convicted of sexual assault and robbery case of May 1987 in which a mother and daughter were robbed, beaten, and the latter raped at their home in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. After being released from a prison in West Virginia in 2016, he became a motivational speaker to help others. She did her schooling from Avondale High School in Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies (political science, economics and sociology) from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar in Spelman College.
After that, she received a masters degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at in Austin, Texas, USA and a Juris Doctor (JD) from Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.
She returned to Atlanta and worked as a tax attorney at the Sutherland Asbill & Brennan law firm in Atlanta, with a focus on tax-exempt organizations, healthcare and public finance.
In 1991, Stacey was chosen as valedictorian of her high school. She and her parents traveled by bus to the governor’s mansion to attend the annual valedictorian’s reception but where told to leave by the guard. Although they were eventually allowed to attend the reception but this experience stuck with the Abrams. Abrams led a protest in 1992 against the Rodney King verdict and co-founded a group called the Students for African American Empowerment.
In 2002, at age of 29 years, Abrams was appointed a deputy city attorney for the City of Atlanta.
She served in the Georgia House of Representatives for 11 years from 2007 to 2017, seven as Minority Leader from 2011 to 2017.
Abrams has received numerous awards including: John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award (2012), Friend of Labor Award (2018) from the Georgia AFL-CIO, and also received an A-ratings from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in recognition for her work as a public servant.
